“I am not African because
I was born in Africa,
but because Africa was born in me”

- Dr. Kwame Nkrumah -

Driven by
Ubujima & Ubuntu

Ubujima is Swahili wordplay for Ubunifu (Creativity) and Ujima (Collective work and responsibility)

Ubuntu is an African word rooted in humanist African philosophy that translates as “humanity to others”, or “I am because we are”.

We live in a time of massive institutional failure where our unconscious individual and collective actions yield undesirable outcomes. The list is well known: inequalities, climate change, hunger, poverty, terrorism, violence, destruction of communities, nature, and life — the very foundations of our social, economic, ecological, and spiritual welfare.

These times call for a new consciousness, collaboration and collective leadership capacity to meet these challenges in a more conscious, intentional, and strategic way. The development of such a capacity would allow us to create a future of greater possibilities.

That such capacity is the AfroCom - a platform and a movement!

AfroCom is global Afro-community project born out of the Ubujima Initiative: a transnational Afro-civil movement to connect all things Africa - people, history, culture, ideas and aspirations, resources, etc - towards co-creating a new transnational Africa as desired by and for all.

- Our Vision -

A connected, prosperous, and self-sustaining Afro-community where technology and shared values drive unity, opportunity, and transformation

- Our Mission -

To connect and empower individuals especially the global Afro-community, while addressing systemic challenges that hinder their our well-being and collective growth.

By fostering a cooperative environment, we aim to foster impactful connectivity, enhance access to resources, promote cultural exchange, and uplift lives through community engagement and co-creation.

- Strategic Focus -

Our strategic focus revolves around four key pillars:

  • Consciousness: Promoting awareness of individual inter-connectedness with the broader community and beyond

  • Connectivity: Building impactful relationships among users, ideas, and knowledge.

  • Community: Fostering social belonging as a fundamental element for sustainable societies.

  • Co-creation: Encouraging collective creativity for effective problem-solving and sustainable solutions.

💰 Reinvesting in the Community – 50% of AfroCom’s profits are reinvested into community initiatives, chosen and voted on by platform users

Structure:
8/20 Governance

Though generally incorporated as a limited liability company, we are internally structured as a multi-level cooperative with two main classes of shareholders: a primary class of change-makers (founders, collaborators and investors) and a secondary class of platform-users (the community) with two governance control class using the Pareto principle

Pareto principle

AfroCom operates and is structured by the Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule: a theory that maintains that 80 percent of the output from a given situation or system is determined by 20 percent of the input.

Thus 80% of AfroCom's decisions are driven by the platform users (the communities we serve) and the change-makers exercise remaining 20% control

Leadership,
Management & Team

Board of Directors

AfroCom Coop’s board of directors is composed of nine (9) members (the founder, four (4) collaborators, two (2) investors, and  two (2) public)  either elected by the members at a general meeting or appointed by the chairperson (founder)

The election of the board will be conducted in the second general meeting - thus two years from the date of incorporation. In the meantime, the founder will take charge of all board-related matters and appoint temporary directors if needed.

Supervisory Committee

AfroCom Board and general assembly will appoint a Supervisory Committee. The Committee is composed of at least five (5) persons with its constituency mentioned in the by-law. On voluntary basis, retiring Board members can opt to be supplemented as needed by other Board members as decided by the Board, and will be gender-balanced.

bodies of the region and responsible for the leadership and efficient management of the

regional organisation.
